Melrose Pure Vegetable Glycerine has an oily texture but is water soluble. Although glycerine forms the backbone of a fat, by itself it most resembles a carbohydrate. Recent research has shown glycerine does not significantly elevate blood insulin and only minimally elevates blood sugar levels. Vegetable glycerine is a clear, colourless, and odourless liquid with a sweet taste and has the consistency of a thick syrup.

Glycerine is used in "low carb" products for sweetness and to retain moisture. Glycerine is used by endurance athletes to superhydrate as glycerine improves water retention in muscle cells.
