Nothing says Easter like the warm, spiced aroma of freshly baked hot cross buns! These Organic Dark Chocolate Hot Cross Buns are a wholesome twist on the classic, blending rich dark chocolate chunks with fragrant cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves for a flavour that’s indulgent yet nourishing. Made with organic ingredients and sweetened naturally with coconut or rapadura sugar, they’re a guilt-free treat packed with antioxidants from dark chocolate and gut-friendly probiotics from yoghurt. Perfect fresh from the oven with a smear of butter, these buns are a must-have for an Easter celebration—delicious, wholesome, and irresistibly good!
what you need (makes 8-10 bars)
- 1 cup self-raising plain organic flour or 1 cup plain organic unbleached flour with 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 ½ tsp cinnamon powder
- ½ tsp nutmeg
- ¼ tsp ground cloves
- 3 Tbs coconut or rapadura sugar
- ¾ cup plain or coconut yoghurt
- 1 tsp vanilla extract or paste
- ¼ cup dark chocolate chunks roughly chopped
- 2 tsp maple syrup – only for glaze at end of cooking
For Glaze:
- ¼ cup plain unbleached flour
- 2 Tbs water
what to do
- Pre-heat oven 200°C (390°F). Line a baking sheet with baking paper.
- Place all dry ingredients into a bowl and combine.
- Add in wet ingredients and mix well.
- Using extra flour, knead mixture on a bench until smooth and well combined.
- Form mixture into 5 medium sized buns and place on baking sheet
- Make the glaze by combining the water and flour and putting into a piping back or zip lock bag with a small hole in the corner.
- Pipe a cross shape across the top of each bun.
- Place in over and bake for 20mins.
- Once they’ve come out of the oven, glaze them with some maple syrup.
- Serve hot with butter…yum!
